Murray’s has been Nantucket’s department store for almost seventy years. In this store, you can see a lot of Nantucket’s rich history as well as a lot of fashionable clothes and accessories.
Philip C. Murray, grandfather of Castaway co-founders Andrew and Matt Murray, invented the now-iconic Nantucket Reds in the 1960s. Like the unique, worn-in sails that dot the shores of Brittany, France, these trousers were fashioned of a red canvas fabric that was designed to fade with time. These one-of-a-kind trousers soften and fade after being washed several times and exposed to salt air. Ask an employee to tell you this fascinating story. The collection has its own section, and items like overalls, shirts, and pants in the signature color may be found there.
Murray’s has been around for almost seventy-five years, and the business will be celebrating its one hundredth anniversary soon thanks to the dedication of Philip Murray’s grandsons. The aesthetic may change over the years, but the vibe remains the same.
Murray’s Toggery Shop, along with its Main Street neighbor Sylvia Antiques, takes great pride in being two of the longest continuously operating businesses on Nantucket.
