Nantucket Ice is a non-profit founded in 1995, and the first-ever year-round ice-skating rink on Nantucket Island opened in 2002, located at 10 Backus Lane. Its mission is to create a healthy recreational atmosphere where Nantucket families can gather and bond over the sport of ice skating. The facility is open to people of all ages and skill levels to come together and enjoy the sport.
Nantucket Ice has a wide selection of programs for you to choose from. Whether you are looking for a fun pastime or looking to get serious about figure skating, they have something for everyone.
- General Skating
Public Skating is an all-year activity at Nantucket Ice! Skaters aged five and under must be accompanied by an adult. Kids on Ice is a twice-weekly, after-school program that caters to children between the ages of 5 and 12. Thursdays are for K-5 graders, and Fridays are for 6-12 graders. Helmets are required and are available at the rink. Registration is required for this program. Family Public Skate is a Sunday event that welcomes local youth and their families. Free Style Practice allows higher-level skaters to practice independently, while a certified coach must accompany lower-level skaters.
- Ice Hockey
For adults aged 18 and above, for all skill levels, you can join Adult Puck and Stick sessions to practice your skating and shooting skills. Necessary equipment includes a helmet, gloves, stick, and hockey skates. Puck and Stick sessions are open to skaters of any age and level of ability. Adult Open Hockey – gather your friends and make for a full ice hockey game. Men’s League offers a full game schedule during the summer months, with six teams playing on Monday nights. During the winter, Men’s League shifts to Men’s Open Stick.
- Young Hockey
Nantucket Youth Hockey strives to foster, promote, and enhance involvement in the exciting sport of ice hockey. All children aged 4-18 can learn the basics of the game in an environment that promotes safety, self-discipline, good sportsmanship, and teamwork. Nobadeer Selects Hockey Skills is a 50-minute session designed specifically for ages 6-14. Here, players will have the opportunity to hone their skills in a practical, situational setting.
Friday nights at the rink are now even more fun! Join for MITE/SQUIRT Spring League and enjoy three-on-three hockey. Prior hockey experience is recommended. Suppose you’re a beginner looking to get into the game. Learn to Play Hockey Skills program is the perfect fit. Plus, they also offer specialized goalie training!
- Learn to skate
Spring Basic Skills and Free Style class – perfect for those just learning or striving to improve their skating skills. Spring Popsicles class is designed for children aged four and up who are Kindergarteners. Here, they will learn the fundamentals of skating, such as marching, gliding, and stopping. This class is also great for those who are transitioning into ice hockey. Fun on the ice with the Spring House Performance class! Skaters will learn the basics of synchronized skating and how to tell a story with their moves. They’ll get to show off their skills in the spring show.
It also has a combo class of Spring House Performance and Basic Skills on Thursdays and Saturdays. Parent + Tot Class is designed for skaters aged four and under and their parents. Adults can learn to play hockey on Tuesdays from 6:00 PM-6:50 PM and Learn to Skate on Wednesdays from 6:00 PM-6:50 PM. Learn to Skate OPEN ICE. This class is reserved for skaters with experience and who want to improve their abilities with coach supervision.
- Curling
The Nantucket Curling Club, established in 2016, offers three sessions per year plus plenty more chances to hone your curling skills. Everyone is welcome, regardless of their level of expertise; no special equipment or skating experience is necessary. Visit their Facebook page to get more information. Thursday Night Curling – it’s the perfect opportunity to have some fun with curling, even if you’re a novice.
- Summer Camps
Brian and Keith Yandle’s Hockey Camp Practices provide a comprehensive approach to improving hockey skills, with on-ice game situation instruction and off-ice conditioning. The Riley Hockey Clinic is designed to bring players to the next level by honing their skills and fostering team play. Driscoll Skating & Skills offers a dynamic blend of Skating Edge Work and Power Skating drills. The teaching points and instruction are geared to be the most effective and efficient way to learn.
